Lexi Kossmann | Trust Department

"Our first full week at Parkside started with a meeting from Angie and Kyle where we learned about what a trust can do and the bank’s role in enacting a trust. It was super interesting to see the level of responsibility that comes with these roles, and how the Trust team adheres to such high standards. I liked learning how the team balances compliance and getting the best deals for their clients; I also enjoyed hearing about the client relationships that Kyle and Angie diligently work to build. On Tuesday, we had the pleasure of going to Five Star burger with the hilarious Trust team, and we got to hear about some job highlights. This week, I feel like I gained understanding of not only what a trust does, but also valuable advice for building my own future trust. We’re starting to fall into the swing of things at Parkside, and I look forward to the weeks ahead!"

Andrew Singer | Trust Department

“The second week of our internship was our trust rotation, and with it came lots of opportunities to meet new people and learn more about the industry. This was my first exposure to trusts and Kyle’s “101” was a great introduction to what they are, how they’re used, and what he and the rest of the team do on a day-to-day basis. Later in the week we met with Curtis Searcy, who expanded on Kyle’s presentation and answered any questions we had, particularly noting the career progression and client relationships of people in the industry. We also worked on a number of trust-related projects, the most exciting of which was a competitive analysis focused on identifying how Parkside compares to other trust companies in the St. Louis and Midwest area.”

Caitlin Williams | Trust Department ▼

“To say that the Parkside trust team is a lively bunch would be an understatement. Every conversation we had with trust brought jokes and laughter and made for a good time. On Monday, Kyle took us through Trust 101, explaining the basics of what a trust is and how it operates and what a day-to-day life in the trust office is like. Trusts are not a commonly approached subject in your regular college business classes, so I am happy we had the opportunity to learn about them. We had the chance to read and analyze a real trust document, and were responsible for vetting the investment management firms on the trusts that Parkside serves as an administrative trustee on. On Thursday, we were able to meet with Curtis Searcy, who answered any and all questions we had about trust or wealth management, and tasked us with a rather fun competitive analysis project for other trust service-providing companies in Saint Louis. I came into this week excited, but unsure what to expect as I was not particularly familiar with how a trust office operates, but my few expectations were thoroughly exceeded and I now feel confident in my ability to explain what the trust office at Parkside does. Thanks Trust!”

Evan Yalavarthi | Trust Department ▼

“The Trust rotation was the perfect rotation to start with because of how enthusiastic and fun the Trust team at Parkside is. Additionally, Kyle took us through the Trust 101 presentation, which taught me reasons for a trust to be created and multiple strategies to minimize taxes and maintain more control over an estate through trusts. We had the privilege of working with real trust documents and hearing stories from Parkside’s Trust team about navigating different family dynamics. Parkside’s TFO President, Curtis Searcy, also sat down with us and answered any of our questions about a career in trust services and wealth management. Finally, the trust competitor project involved researching trust services at competitors of Parkside to improve Parkside’s trust marketing. Overall, my own understanding of the best practices when creating and carrying out a trust greatly increased, and the entire week was filled with fun thanks to the outgoing Trust team.”

Lexi Kossmann | Family Office Department

“Our three weeks spent in Parkside’s Family Office were eye-opening; I learned about the complexity and breadth of services provided to clients, investment strategies, and how collaboration is vital in running a well-functioning team. My mentor, Katie, deserves a huge shoutout for being supportive of me while working on projects, but also answering all of my questions. From lunches with the analysts, to the L10 meeting, it was clear to me how communication is vital to the Family Office team. Getting to shadow my mentor as she placed trades on a client’s behalf, the attention to detail that the analysts put into each client was obvious and impressive. Katie, Quin and the other analysts went above and beyond helping us and making sure that we understood everything including taxes, financial independence models, and even education funds. Additionally, I appreciated seeing how Parkside commits to furthering the knowledge of their analysts and ensuring that everyone’s education continues while working by pushing certificate programs, trainings, and conferences. Overall, my weeks spent in the Family Office solidified my interest in pursuing Wealth Management. Thank you to Katie and Quin for being amazing mentors to Andrew and I!”

Andrew Singer | Family Office Department

“My three week rotation with Parkside’s Family Office department was an amazing introduction into the industry of wealth management. A big reason that this rotation went as well as it did was the mentoring aspect that Lexi and I had access to—Quin (my mentor) did an incredible job of introducing me to the roles of an analyst while also being available for any questions I had. Some of the most enjoyable parts of these past weeks were simply sitting with Quin and talking through the work he was doing; I particularly found sitting in during the pre/post review process to be very beneficial from a learning perspective. Although we didn’t get as much “hands on” work for the more important tasks, being able to participate during important conversations and meetings gave me a much deeper understanding of the roles of an analyst and the wealth management industry as a whole. I also really enjoyed getting to know the rest of the Family Office team—everyone was super kind and more than willing to answer any questions we had.”

Caitlin Williams | Commercial Bank Department ▼

“The three weeks that Evan and I spent on the commercial banking rotation were full of educational and hands-on learning experiences. I came into this internship fairly confident that I was more interested in the wealth management side of Parkside, but the banking rotation has encouraged me to reconsider. I was pleasantly surprised to witness the collaboration and encouragement within the bank, and specifically within my mentorship. I was thrilled to have the privilege of sitting down on the second floor with all of the other bankers, listening and being part of the constant hustle and bustle on the banking floor. My favorite part of the banking rotation was the internal or executive loan committee that occurred every week because the discussion about whether the loan would be approved highlighted the advantages and disadvantages of said loan.”

Evan Yalavarthi | Commercial Bank Department ▼

“It’s difficult to end the banking rotation, because I feel like I’m just scratching the surface in terms of banking knowledge, although I’ve learned so much over these three weeks. My favorite aspects of the banking rotation were the mentorship and responsibility I was given from the first day. After only a couple days of training, I was able to contribute important analysis to loans that my mentor, Matt, was working on. Eventually, I took a leading role in loan renewals that were then brought to the loan committee. The work was definitely rewarding when I could see a deal that I worked on pass through the loan committee. Near the end of the rotation, Caitlin and I were able to see new types of deals such as debt financing for private equity acquisitions. Every day in this rotation was full of excitement as we had the privilege of sitting on the banking floor for the three weeks, experiencing the lively and collaborative culture.”

Lexi Kossmann | Commercial Bank Department

"In the banking rotation I enjoyed learning about lending, and I shadowed Matt to learn how to complete tasks like he would as a credit analyst. In my three weeks on the bank side, I completed financial spreads, updated loan renewals, and even got to make a couple of calls to clients. Tuesday mornings were filled with Loan Committee meetings which helped me understand the processes that the bank takes for renewals and new loans. I enjoyed listening to the analysts present on each company and already being familiar with some of the companies. Sitting on the second floor had a positive impact on my learning as I was surrounded by lenders, I felt that I was better at absorbing the information. Witnessing the collaborative environment on the second floor seemed to align well with the culture at Parkside. I am thankful to Matt for allowing me to get a glance into the work of an analyst."
Andrew Singer | Commercial Bank Department

"I had a great experience in the banking rotation—I started this internship more interested in the banking side and I would say that my interest has been strengthened over these past three weeks. I particularly liked how involved I was in the loan process; as soon as we started the rotation we were introduced to financial spreads, loan reviews & renewals, and presentation write-ups. Kyle was my mentor and did an excellent job of explaining each of these processes and answering any questions I had. It also was very helpful sitting down on the second floor with the bank side since we could freely interact with the rest of the bankers, whether it was asking questions or socializing. I would say that the most enjoyable part of this rotation was getting to understand and learn more about the companies that we were lending to, particularly through the senior lenders who were more than happy to speak with me about their clients. Overall, I found this rotation to be the perfect mix of educational and enjoyable, and most of the credit goes to Kyle and the rest of the banking team."
Caitlin Williams | Family Office Department

"My time spent in the family office kept me constantly on my toes and ready for whatever was thrown at me next. Because of the wide variety of solutions Parkside offers to their clients, the projects we had the opportunity to work on continued to teach us something new. Coming to Parkside as a new intern in May, I knew there was an interest in wealth management inside of me. What I didn’t know was the encompassing and comprehensive nature of Parkside’s family office. Unlike many wealth management firms, Parkside’s services include asset and portfolio management, income tax planning, risk management, education funding, trust services, etc. With Christine as my mentor, I was able to dive into all aspects of the family office and see firsthand what a career in private wealth management might look like. Christine and all of the analysts made a huge effort to include Evan and I in on whatever they were working on- whether it be making trades, running financial independence and education funding models, or creating solution books for prospective clients."
Evan Yalavarthi | Family Office Department

"If I had to describe the family office rotation in one word, it would be edifying. Every day I was learning about something new. I greatly appreciate my mentor, Austin, and the other analysts that took time to explain new tasks to me consistently and teach me all about the family office services that Parkside offers. Before the internship, I thought that the family office side of Parkside only dealt with asset management, but Parkside also adds value for clients through other services like financial, retirement, and tax planning. I really enjoyed sitting in on pre-review and post-solution meetings to experience how an advisor manages his or her relationship with the client. Furthermore, my favorite part of the rotation was participating in the analyst work that goes into creating a solution packet tailored to the client. My knowledge of tax law and investing improved drastically over the course of this rotation. After experiencing the family office side of Parkside, I definitely have a newfound interest in wealth management and the various types of investments that I’ve been able to learn about."

Lunch N' Learn Highlights

During their internship, interns have the unique opportunity to learn about the history and unique culture of Parkside directly from our senior level executives. They attended Lunch N' Learns presented by the following departments: Family Office & Banking, Loans, Intro to Investments & Banking, Bank Operations and Client Services Representative, 401(k), Treasury Management, and Marketing.

Learn what our interns had to say about their informational Lunch N' Learns!
Family Office & Banking

"We received great advice from both Allen and Andy – be professional, prompt, and follow up; there is more to building your network than just receiving, build it to help people too. I appreciated Allen describing the characteristics of an ideal Parkside client – engaged but doesn’t want to micromanage and pick everything out themselves, and lets Parkside do their job.

Allen explained the role of family office advisors very well and how Parkside differentiates itself from other advisors. It was clear to see how Parkside prioritizes the goals of its clients with multiple meetings annually. Additionally, Allen stressed how Parkside does not focus only on sales and commissions but instead on relationships with clients, which explains Parkside’s extensive client referrals and low attrition rate. Allen said that Parkside is “selling discipline” as the advisors want what is best for the clients and prepare solutions that will benefit them in their long-term goals. I learned so many new aspects of the client dynamic during the lunch that I did not initially understand about wealth management.

Andy approached our conversation of commercial banking from the ground up by explaining what the industry is and how it works, and then moved onto more Parkside-specific information. He also touched on the typical clients for his group, but Andy put a heavy emphasis on several areas of focus for commercial bankers—liquidity, credit losses, and people. Like Allen, Andy noted that commercial banking is very much a “people business,” and the development of strong relationships is something we should focus on as we enter our careers."

Loans

"The Loan Lunch n’ Learn with Kinna and Karen was so informational! We learned about the processes at the front and back end of loans and the internal and external responsibilities of the Loan Committee.  Additionally, I enjoyed hearing how Karen’s team interacts with the customer and then Kinna’s team picks it up and provides quality and assurance to the transaction. I enjoyed learning about how the team goes through great lengths to make sure that the loans they lend are being used for their intended purposes and how the team secures collateral in case the loan is being misused. Kinna and Karen are great role models for Parkside’s network. As both talked on their interactions with the Lenders, it became apparent just how amazing these ladies are!"

Intro to Investments & Banking

"Later in the summer, Matt and Austin took us through a very informative presentation on investing, which was very helpful. We appreciated their approach because they explained everything in a much different way than how it’s explained in our classes at school, which deepened our understanding of investments and investment strategies. Matt and Austin stressed the importance of spending time in the market rather than trying to time the market, using very convincing statistics along the way."

Bank Operations and Client Services Representative

"We really enjoyed our conversation with Melissa and Amy as they touched on their roles and experiences in bank operations and client services. We found it very interesting to get two different perspectives on Parkside: Amy touched on her experience watching Parkside grow over the years, and Melissa pointed out several reasons she enjoys the culture here compared to larger banks. Additionally, both Melissa and Amy spoke about their role in dealing with fraud, and it was interesting to see how their two groups worked with one another. Overall we thought this was a very enjoyable conversation; Melissa and Amy were super nice and great to talk to.

Parkside’s outstanding company culture has been pointed out in many of our meetings, but Melissa did a great job of explaining why Parkside is so “uncommon,” compared to larger banks she has worked at. Lunch with Melissa and Amy was great!"

401(k)

"We enjoyed a delicious Chipotle lunch with Brian and Dave while discussing and learning about 401(k) advisors and the kinds of client relationships that come with it. The biggest takeaway or piece of advice we learned was to first, start saving now, and second, let the market take its course. Don't pull out of the market when times are bad because you will likely miss its rebounds (which tend to be some of the biggest and most lucrative days). Parkside’s 401(k) office sets itself apart from competitors in many ways, most importantly by taking a more personal and educational approach. Parkside takes the time and effort to explain to and advise individual employees at the client’s company the best way to manage a 401(k) plan for yourself with what your employer offers.

Dave and Brian mentioned that they use the benefits of Parkside’s Family Office partnership with ACG (Asset Consulting Group) to carefully select and pick funds that employers (and their employees) can later pick from for their own individual retirement plans. Parkside offers different plans for everyone, whether it's the kind of client that wants nothing to do with their 401(k)-plan management, so they can opt for a less hands-on plan like a Target Date Fund, or one that would rather individually select each fund themselves.

Brian and Dave did a great job of describing 401(k) services from their perspective as well as our perspective of entering the workforce soon. They explained how Parkside is unique in offering dedicated 401(k) advisors, unlike many other banks that have general wealth managers advising on 401(k)s. We learned how Brian and Dave choose certain funds to be available for 401(k) participants and customize 401(k) plans using risk models and target date funds. Furthermore, Dave and Brian gave great advice on contributing to a 401(k) when we start our careers. This Lunch N’ Learn taught me the importance of seeking out an employer after college that offers attractive retirement savings programs, such as 401(k) matching. It was also interesting to see the value that Parkside has over other 401(k) service providers. For example, Parkside takes no commissions or revenue sharing from choosing certain funds, gives educational talks, has a dedicated 401(k) team, takes on more risk for clients than many other banks do, and had advisors that are always available for individual 401(k) participants to consult."

Treasury Management

"During the Treasury Management Lunch & Learn, Kelley and Mary-Cait walked us through the treasury and deposit services that Parkside offers to its business clients. I was especially interested in how Kelley and Mary-Cait’s team deal with the increased cases of fraud, such as providing positive pay and ACH blocks and filters. Furthermore, Kelley and Mary-Cait showcased the Parkside culture that we’ve seen so many times in our pervious Lunch & Learns. It was nice to see how another crucial part of the bank operates that I haven’t seen yet, portraying the importance of every division at Parkside in helping the bank run as a whole. Lastly, Kelley and Mary-Cait stressed how their roles allow them to be client facing every day, which is their favorite part of the job. I’ve noticed that many professionals at Parkside love their work because of the relationships they get to develop while helping clients improve their business or their personal finances."
Marketing

"We had a great conversation over lunch about Alex’s and Sarah’s role as the marketing team at Parkside. Alex ran us through a detailed presentation on the different aspects of marketing that we’ve learned about in classes at college. Throughout the presentation, Alex and Sarah showed us how Parkside utilizes these marketing topics in practice to reach their target audience. We learned how the marketing team at Parkside focuses on promotion through different channels from digital marketing to in-person events. It was interesting to see the analytics behind an increasingly digital marketing world. Also, it was nice to see that a lot of marketing still occurs face-to-face at networking events. We noticed how creative Alex and Sarah must be to continuously come up with new ideas to promote Parkside’s brand. Additionally, we learned how marketing assists the bank and TFO divisions throughout the entire client relationship."
Book Club

"After reading A Random Walk Down Wall Street during our down time at Parkside, we had a book club discussion over lunch with Matt Harlow. Matt did a tremendous job at breaking apart the book into different sections and explaining the investment theories behind each section. We covered the history of the stock market and different speculative bubbles in the market’s past. Additionally, Matt walked us through technical and fundamental analysis, as well as risk and return. Finally, we discussed personal finance and the best ways to invest over our lifetime. It was also interesting to hear Matt’s personal opinions on investing and how that might differ with clients based on their risk tolerance and wealth needs."
